Things To Do In Arthur River

Azure Kingfisher

Azure Kingfisher

This area is the gateway to the Tarkine Wilderness.

Many visitors enjoy a day cruise 15km up the river to explore this unique and pristine environment.

You will be surrounded by ancient forests of Blackwoods, Myrtle, Celery top and giant Tree Ferns. The magnificent white bellied sea eagle glides overhead and then comes in to be fed.

The Azure Kingfisher is an impressive sight and you might catch a glimpse of them in their natural environment.

The Balfour Track Forest Reserve is close by and is a 2½ hr return walk. The South Arthur Forest Drive will inspire you with beautiful walking tracks and picnic areas.

Visit the Tarkine Forest Adventure Centre at Dismal Swamp with it’s new bike tracks.

Hire a boat or canoe, take yourself fishing in the best trout fishing water in the world. This major undammed pristine river flows through a cool reliable rainfall environment. It’s limited access means most of this fishery is untouched.

Lots of silly pan sized fish in the rapids in the day and serious fish coming out of the holes at last light. Sea runners to 15lb taken from the shore and trolling.

Go four wheel driving, visit Woolnorth Windfarm, go swimming, or catch some great west coast waves when you go surfing. Tours can be arranged through your accommodation.

Breathe in the cleanest air in the world.

West Coast Tasmania Surfing

West Coast Tasmania Surfing

The west coast of Tasmania is renowned for its great waves, with the Marrawah West Coast Classic competition one of the highlights of the surfing calendar. Turn up on the March long weekend to be in it.

The 2008 Australian Wavesailing Titles were hosted in Marrawah.

“[Marrawah is a unique place – it sits in the Roaring Forties, which is a very strong trade wind, and we’ve got a huge amount of ocean to the west of us, which generates a very consistent swell. You are almost guaranteed to get a fantastic day or two. John Pott, Organiser, as quoted on ABC Tasmania.

Other Arthur River Attractions

The Arthur River/Pieman protected area is quite a remote region of Tasmania’s far North West coast, but there is certainly plenty to see and do! Following are a few links to other attractions and information about this ruggedly beautiful area.

It is also central as a base for day trips to the Woolnorth Wind Farm, the Dismal Swamp Maze or four wheel driving trips exploring towards the Balfour mines and the Pieman River.

The South Arthur Forest drive, from Kanunnah Bridge to Tayatea Bridge, has several short walks and picnic areas. These include a Celery Top pine nature trail, the Balfour Track rainforest walk, Kanunnah Bridge picnic area, and the Julius River and Lake Chisolm Forest Reserves.
